Jaidev, whose journey in the world of music would later earn him acclaim as a celebrated composer, had a fascinating and challenging early life that ultimately shaped his destiny.
Born in Nairobi, Jaidev spent his formative years in Ludhiana, India. His ambition to become a film star led him to make a bold decision at the age of 15 when he ran away to Mumbai. In the bustling city of dreams, he found his initial foothold in the film industry by working as a child actor for the Wadia Film Company, appearing in eight films.
Jaidev's musical journey began at a young age in Ludhiana, where he was introduced to music by Prof. Barkat Rai. This early exposure ignited his passion for music, which would become his lifelong pursuit. Upon his arrival in Mumbai, he sought formal music education and honed his skills under the guidance of accomplished musicians Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar.
However, Jaidev's dreams of a career in films were temporarily put on hold due to a family crisis. He was compelled to return to Ludhiana when his father lost his eyesight, thrusting the sole responsibility of supporting his family onto Jaidev's young shoulders.
Tragically, after his father's passing, Jaidev took on the role of caretaker for his sister, Ved Kumari, ensuring her well-being and later arranging her marriage to Sat-Paul Varma. It was a testament to his sense of responsibility and commitment to family.
In 1943, Jaidev's musical journey took a significant turn when he left for Lucknow to study under the tutelage of the renowned music maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. This marked a pivotal moment in his life, as he delved deeper into the world of classical music, refining his skills and expanding his musical horizons.
Jaidev's remarkable journey from a young aspiring actor to a celebrated music composer reflects the resilience and determination that defined his character. His dedication to music and his unwavering commitment to his family laid the foundation for a career that would make him a revered figure in the Indian music industry.
